Dive Team Meeting - January 20

The first Dive N Surf Dive Team meeting of 2010 will be held Wednesday night, JANUARY 20 and featuresHeather George from Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF). Heather will discuss REEF's programs and its surveying work here in California. She will also discuss opportunities for local divers to get involved as a REEF volunteer fish surveyor.

Heather has been involved with REEF as a volunteer fish surveyor since 2002 and had been a board member since 2007. REEF was founded in 1990 out of growing concern about the health of the marine environment and the desire to provide SCUBA divers a way to help protect marine populations. REEF achieves this goal through its volunteer fish monitoring program, the REEF Fish Survey Project. Participants not only learn about the environment they dive in, but also produce valuable information that scientists, marine park staff, and the general public use to protect fish populations. Other REEF programs include the Invasive Lionfish program and the Grouper Moon Project, which studies spawning aggregations, movement, and behavior of the endangered Nassau Grouper in the Caribbean. The meeting will be held at Lou-E-Luey's banquet hall on the International Boardwalk in Redondo Beach. Chef Rafael is preparing three dinner selections for us for choose from, so bring your appetite and some friends! All meals cost $11 each, including tax. A cash bar will be set up in the room.

Dive N' Surf staff members will provide news on local beach dives, boat dives, special events, and classes planned for 2010. We will hold a $3 raffle for one grand prize SCUBA-related item, plus drawings for other door prizes. All dive team members receive a free door prize drawing ticket with the purchase of a meal. If you wear a dive team T-shirt, you will receive two free tickets to double your chances of winning (you can only win once though!).
